Container City™ at Dunraven School

Container City™ at Dunraven School

Designed and built in only three months by Container City™ in collaboration with SCABAL Architects, i remember seeing the photos of this iconic sports hall building back in June 2009 when it was built*. It was great to have the opportunity of designing the courts and painting the lines and logo on their replacement sports floor this summer.

Container City™ system reuses shipping containers linked together to provide high strength, prefabricated steel modules that can be combined to create a wide variety of building shapes. This low cost approach to building has been commended by both Government and Private Sectors for its design and the economical way it recycles industrial products.

The fit out of all the units is done off site at the Container City warehouse and only craned in once the site and units are ready. The final fit out follows on site, and in a matter of weeks the sports hall is ready for use.

Dunraven Educational Trust decided to replace their original rubber area elastic floor with a new Taraflex Evolution lagoon point elastic (P1 category 25-35% of shock absorption) sports vinyl, that complies with EN standard 14904 and is ideal for sports and leisure activities. The Taraflex sports floor is designed, manufactured and specified by Gerflor, whose sports specialist David Carter put forward three local approved flooring contractors to quote for the installation (won by J W Contract Flooring Ltd, Kingston Upon Thames).

We worked direct for the Trust and with Gary Gray (Head of Facilities Management) prepared the court layout design complete with their striking school logo that now takes pride of place in the centre of the new floor. We cleaned and rinsed the floor before marking the lines and logo with TLD Aqua paint that is required on Taraflex sports floors.

Taraflex makes life easy for players and cleaners: triple-action Protecsol® surface treatment is factory applied for easy maintenance, friction protection and ‘intelligent’ sliding coefficient. It’s a great fit for the original concept of Container City™ - lighter, quicker, cheaper.

Gary Gray, Head of Facilities Management, Dunraven Educational Trust said:

“The team at Biddle Sport were excellent right from the start with advice and guidance all the way through to completion of the project at Dunraven School Sports Hall. I had contacted Mark at Biddle Sport with regards to doing some new line markings and remarking if i was to have a repair carried out on our water damaged sports floor surface.

The only trouble was we had no idea of manufacturer or availability, this is where Mark’s wealth of sports floor knowledge really helped us as he identified the surface as an old Italian rubber sports surface that is no longer distributed to the UK.

Mark put me in contact with Gerflor and organised a rep to visit me to provide a specification for replacing our floor with a Taraflex sports floor system, which we proceeded with and had replaced by a Gerflor approved contractor.

In the meantime the team at Biddle had been working away and carried out a full colour design drawing for me with all the court markings i had requested, they also added a surprise option in the design which was the schools logo in the centre and we were extremely happy we chose to have this as it looks great and just finishes off the floor perfectly.

When the team from Biddle Sport turned up to do the line markings they were friendly and very professional and this was maintained throughout their time on site. They worked very efficiently and cleaned the newly installed flooring to a high standard before commencing their line marking work. The lines are very visible and are highly accurate to the design and i have not found any faults with the line marking carried out. The team cleaned up and cleared out the site so well that you would never have known they had been there, apart from the lovely clean new floor and line markings.

I cannot recommend Mark and Biddle Sport highly enough and if you are thinking of using Biddle Sport I recommend that you do as you will not be disappointed with your decision”.

  • Commissioned by the London Borough of Lambeth, this innovative building was rewarded for its commitment to sustainability by being voted the ‘Best Small Building Project’ at the Building Industry Construction Awards in 2009.
